Albert Henry Findley

Market Place, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire

The Painting

A watercolour measuring 4¾" x 6½". Signed A.H. Findley.

About the Artist

Albert Henry Findley (1880-1975) was a Leicester watercolour artist who specialised in Leicestershire scenes. He lived in Leicester all his life and continued to paint until his sight failed. His work was very detailed and precise, so much so that when he applied to the Royal Academy, his work was apparently dismissed as being too photographic.

The Subject

Market Place, Melton Mowbray. The painting depicts market day at the Market Place in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. It is a Spring day – the lady in the left forefront is holding a bunch of daffodils. The costumes indicate that the scene was painted in the 1930s.
