About the Artist

Vittorio Rappini (1877-1939) was an Italian painter who specialised in watercolours of the Middle East. He travelled in Turkey, Iraq, Egypt and Tunisia.

 

The Subject

Café in Iraq. A fine example of the artist’s skill in depicting perspective. The eye of the viewer is led from the figure carrying a basket of oranges in the foreground to the Moorish arch in the background. The strong play of sunlight and shade highlights the architectural features, contrasted against the bright blue sky.
