A watercolour measuring 16¾" x 23¼". Signed W. Lucas and dated 1880. Inscribed verso: ‘"A Bit of Chaff" by William Lucas, Institute of Painters in Watercolours (London). 92 Clifton Hill, St. John’s Wood N.W.’

 

About the Artist

William Lucas (1840-1895) was a painter in watercolour of portraits and figure subjects. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1864. He resigned in 1882, two years after this watercolour was painted. Subsequently his health broke down and he gave up painting. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (15), British Institution (2), Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street (12), and the New Watercolour Society (100).

 

The Subject

‘A Bit of Chaff’. A farmer travelling to market in a spring cart is distracted by a pretty maid and engages in a bit of banter.
